Hailee Steinfeld Says ‘Sinners’ Role Was One ‘That I Had Been Waiting for’

Hailee Steinfeld is teasing fans about her next movie.

Steinfeld, 28, previewed her upcoming film Sinners during a Who What Wear profile published Wednesday, Feb. 19; the actress and singer costars with Michael B. Jordan in the upcoming vampire-centric story from filmmaker Ryan Coogler.

In the piece, Steinfeld said that making Sinners “was truly something that will stay with me for the rest of my life for so many reasons, but one being that this was a role that I had been waiting for, and I hope and pray that I get to do a million more of these because I do think that’s part of this next phase of life.”

Little is known about Steinfeld’s role in the movie; she plays a character named Mary who is seen potentially romancing one of Jordan’s two characters — and later revealing herself as a villain of sorts — in the movie’s most recent trailer, released in January.

“When I read the script, it was one of those things where it’s just a feeling. It’s a feeling I’ve only got a handful of times, and that’s a privilege and a blessing. But it’s a feeling that, once you have felt it, you crave nothing but that feeling,” she said. Steinfeld also compared finding out that she had landed the part to when she first booked 2010’s True Grit , for which she received an Oscar nomination as a teenager.

“Hailee’s performance in Sinners is very, very versatile and honestly fun. I think it’s gonna make people lean in and get a chance to see her in a way they haven’t had an opportunity to see her in before,” Jordan, 38, told Who What Wear in a statement regarding Steinfeld’s performance.

“She’s extremely talented, an extremely hard worker and a great scene partner. When you’re on a project like this, in the midst of hard scenes to navigate, [and] balancing the emotional aspects and long days, you really get a chance to become a family,” he added, in part. “I’m extremely proud of her, and I can’t wait for the world to see her performance, and I truly can’t wait to see what she does next.”

Steinfeld and Jordan’s new movie also features actors Delroy Lindo, Wunmi Mosaku, Omar Miller, Jayme Lawson and Jack O’Connell. Official loglines for Sinners have described the film as “a new vision of fear” that meets Jordan’s twin brother characters as they “return to their hometown to start again, only to discover that an even greater evil is waiting to welcome them back.”
